While preparing for class, I discovered a neat technique I’d like to call “the Glow” ~ it’s not anything NEW, but I’ve never done this technique before while tangling… We tested it out in last night’s Zentangle 3: Advanced class at Eclectic By Nature Too. The Glow was used around Vertigogh (looks like a sprig of Rosemary) to set it off from the rest of the patterns on the tile.
How to create ”the Glow” on a black Zentangle tile:
- First, draw the pattern, (for example, Vertigogh) using a White Sakura GellyRoll
- Instead of aura-ing with the GellyRoll as you may normally do, draw a heavy White Charcoal Pencil aura instead
- Being careful to preserve the hard-edge line on the inside (nearest the tangle), smudge the outside edge of the aura to create a glowing appearance. Voila!
THANK YOU to the fine group of seasoned tanglers who completed this Zentangle class sequence with me. I’ve enjoyed being on this tangled journey with you and can’t wait to see what you do next! TANGLE ON!

Very cool technique. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, lovely! And terrific tiles by all you students too!

Julie, You’re a genius!!
Awesome zentangles! Julie, what a great technique for enhancing the tangles.
Those are great. I understand the white is a GellyRoll but what is used to do the color?
Grace, the color is Sakura Metallic gel pen. They go on opaque over the black tile and are great for an accent of color. I also love the Sakura Stardust gel pens because they go on glittery with just a hint of color.
this is a great technique. I’ll be using it on my next black tile for sure! Thanks for sharing
Thanks everybody, for tuning into my posts and for the amazing support! I love this community!
Thanks, everyone! I look forward to playing with this one a bit more too ~ I really appreciate your encouragement and support! Make time for your ART!
Very cool! Can’t wait to try this technique on my next black tile~
Thank you, Susan! Tangle on!
